Faculty and the Early Alert Process

Early Alert provides faculty teaching designated courses with a streamlined process to notify students of performance concerns early in the semester. Receiving this feedback well before midterm allows students to seek academic support or adjust their habits in time to positively impact their final course grade. When an Early Alert is submitted, the relevant Student Success unit (Advising, the SMART Center, the Writing Center, Supplemental Instruction, or Academic Coaching) is also notified. Student Success units reach out to students directly to open a dialogue, assess need, and share available support options that empower students to succeed.

How Does Early Alert Help My Students?

  • Early Alerts address more than grades; they also highlight concerns such as effort, attendance, and class engagement.
  • A student struggling in multiple courses may signal a larger issue, providing advisors with important insight to guide targeted intervention and support.
  • That faculty participation in Early Alerts promotes timely student connection to campus resources and support services, thus allowing for earlier intervention to address academic or personal challenges.

Data shows that students receiving an Early Alert who subsequently engaged with student success services consistently earned higher GPAs and were more likely to reenroll than students who did not.

Early Alert Process

  • Beginning September 2, faculty teaching courses designated by their college for Early Alerts (lists below) will receive an email from Associate Director, Student Success Systems, Sarah Matta, with a link to their class roster(s) in .
  • All instructors of designated classes are expected to complete Early Alerts, even if they are not flagging students as “at risk.”
  • Use the link provided in the email to complete the Early Alerts  to ensure they are routed to the appropriate student success unit.
  • Faculty should communicate with students when an Early Alert is submitted and explain that its purpose is to connect them with resources to address challenges and support success in the course.
  • Early Alert submissions are due by  5 PM, Friday, September 19

Alerts

Each Alert reason routes to a specific student success unit (Advising, SMART, Supplemental Instruction, Writing Center, Academic Coaching) for targeted follow-up. Choosing only one reason facilitates this outreach.

Faculty can also submit “High Fives” to encourage students performing well in the course.
