At 63, many people are thinking about retirement. But not Mattie Frascella. She has spent the last four years on the campus of Ƶ sharing classrooms and walking hallways with students young enough to be her grandchildren while earning her first degree after a longtime career in patient advocacy and motherhood. This May, just a few weeks after her 63rd birthday, Frascella will walk across the stage to receive her Bachelor of Arts in English with minors in professional writing and language and literary studies from the Norman J. Radow College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Deontae Nelson likes to say that everyone is on their own journey, as much for himself as for those around him. Nelson’s journey has seen him serving in the Army National Guard, then earning an associate degree in biology from Georgia Military College before arriving at Ƶ in 2022. All the while, he never could shake the idea of studying dance and decided to dive headlong into doing just that. Next week, he’ll graduate with his Bachelor of Arts in Dance with a concentration in Modern Dance from the Robert S. Geer College of the Arts, culminating one journey and commencing another.

As Ella Goode walks across the commencement stage this month, she will do so as the Ƶ President’s Award of Distinction honoree — the university’s highest undergraduate honor. The award is given at spring and fall commencements to a graduate “who serves as an inspiration to their peers, their community, and the entirety of Owl Nation.”

For patients facing cancer or the possibility of it, every second counts. The weeks spent waiting for answers can feel like an eternity. But more importantly, a faster diagnosis means a treatment plan can begin sooner. Ƶ student Preston Brantley is trying to reduce the lengthy wait, typically weeks, sometimes even months, that patients spend waiting for a cancer diagnosis. He is developing an artificial intelligence tool designed to help pathologists detect cancer cells more quickly and efficiently.

Nelly Koz has always made an impact in her community through her love of the outdoors. Now, she’ll have a chance to make an impact on a global level. The environmental science major recently accepted a lucrative internship at Freiburg University in Germany, where she will help with data collection and recording observations on a section of the Black Forest that serves as a living laboratory.

However, the Okafor trio are taking vastly different academic paths as students in the Keeping Sights Upward (KSU) Journey Honors College.

Kaitlyn Sennett will carry several titles with her as she crosses the stage with her bachelor’s degree from Ƶ later this week. Student. Researcher. Motorcyclist. Hunter. Assistant logistics manager. Daughter. Graduate. Survivor. The KSU senior came back to school after a major motorcycle accident in 2024 left her bedridden and unable to walk. A semester off, followed by intense perseverance, overwhelming curiosity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence brought her to where she is today – standing on the floor of Vystar Arena awaiting her bachelor’s degree in biology.

Ƶ senior biology major Ari Schwartz has been recognized with the President’s Award of Distinction and has the resume one would associate with such an honor. The award is given at fall and spring commencements to a graduate “who serves as an inspiration to their peers, their community, and the entirety of Owl Nation.” Schwartz is graduating Dec. 19 with a stack of honors for his published research, and a strong record of campus involvement.
