Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice Academic Distinction Statement

The Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice (SCJ) is a collective of interdisciplinary and community-engaged scholars committed to investigating and addressing social problems, which are broadly defined as conditions or behaviors that have a negative impact on society. Students examine and understand these problems using scientific approaches, including applied, theoretical, and evaluation research. Faculty expertise broadly includes sociological, criminological, and criminal justice research areas related to social harms, social organization and disorganization, policing, courts, and correctional systems, life course sociology and criminology, causes and correlates of crime and deviance, responses to crime, laws, policies, and practices, and myriad forms of inequality. Finally, SCJ faculty are scholars and teachers committed to excellence in teaching and mentorship to ensure graduates are ready for life and work after college. Faculty in the department engage in multiple forms of experiential education and high-impact practices to synthesize their teaching, research, and service roles.

Welcome to the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at ÁñÁ«»ÆÊÓÆµ! We offer majors in Sociology and Criminal Justice, in both traditional and fully online formats. The department also offers a Masters in Criminal Justice. As well, the department offers minors in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Gerontology, Medical Sociology, and Sociology.

The department actively promotes experiential learning. Sociology and Criminal Justice undergraduate majors are required to complete an internship, cooperative studies, or a study abroad ensuring graduates gain valuable professional and cultural insights. Our department is committed to hands-on, real-world learning. Students also have opportunities to engage in faculty-led research projects and participate in service-learning initiatives that address critical social issues.

We value and promote global learning; our faculty have offered study abroad opportunities in Ghana, Germany and Netherlands, and South Korea and Thailand. Our department houses the official journal of the Georgia Sociological Association, the Journal of Public and Professional Sociology. Our department also proudly houses the official journal of the Georgia Sociological Association, the Journal of Public and Professional Sociology, providing a platform for scholarly research and discussion in the field.
