Guided by expert faculty and tailored to diverse interests and skill levels, these programs offer life-changing opportunities to live, learn, and engage with global communities.

Africa Europe Participants

Africa & Europe: A French Language Immersion

In this program, students will have the unique opportunity to strengthen their linguistic skills and cultural understanding through community service and unique cultural experiences in Benin and France. To reach both linguistic and cultural goals, students will lead a variety of educational activities, including reading/writing workshops, games, collaborative projects, etc...that promote literacy among young learners. In selected elementary schools and orphanages, students will work both with young learners and their teachers to promote reading, writing, and creativity.

Language and Cultural Immersion in China

This two-week summer in Beijing program is designed to enhance students' Chinese language skills, Asian cultural knowledge, and intercultural competence in an immersive environment, benefiting their academic and professional futures in the field of Chinese Studies, Asian Studies, International Affairs, Political Science, Cyber Security, Criminal Justice, etc. Students earn 6 credit hours by choosing one Chinese language course (no previous Chinese learning required) and one cultural course (taught in English) from a list of lower and upper division CHIN/ASIA/SA courses that meet the requirements of several minors and majors at KSU.

Maymester in Italy: Exploring Tuscany

Offered by the KSU World Languages and Cultures Department, this full-immersion program is targeted to students with a specific interest in the Italian language and culture, who wish to enhance their knowledge of Italy by fully experiencing the Italian way of life. Participants spend two weeks in the historic Montepulciano, at the heart of Tuscany. Students participate in small-group, interactive language and culture courses that are targeted to their specific skills level; they engage in service-learning activities aimed to build long-lasting ties with the Italian community they are living within and explore the area through guided tours of the town and of the surrounding Chianti countryside. Experiential activities such as an Italian cooking class and tours of local artisan shops are integrated in the program. The program will also include a day trip to Florence to explore the many artistic treasures of this capital of the Italian Renaissance. No prior knowledge of Italian is required.

Seville

Explore Seville: A Journey of Learning is a full-immersion, two-weeks Maymester Study Abroad program with a focus on the cultural diversity of Spain, community engagement and undergraduate research. This program provides students with a unique opportunity to engage directly with the country's complex history through innovative undergraduate research. Students will also participate in cultural activities such as a guided tour of Seville's most iconic landmarks: the Cathedral, the Islamic-era palace of Royal Alcázar and the historic Triana district. They will have an opportunity for a first-hand discovery of the fascinating facets of Spain's gastronomy in a cooking class.

Crossing Borders and Cultures in Southwestern Germany

Spend 11 days in Germany and France next May and "Discover the Heart of Europe"! Entirely in English, this program is open to students from all majors. Students can earn up to six (6) hours of academic credit, including IMPACTS area A (Arts, Humanities, and Ethics) credit. Both courses combine lectures, workshops, community engagement, and excursions to some of the most beautiful and historic places in Europe. Participants study current and global issues such as sustainability, human rights, and transatlantic relations--including the role of European Union. 

Independent Study and Immersion in Germany

The German Studies program offers tailored experiences for individual needs, ranging from short-term to long-term Study- and Work-abroad sojourns, including domestic experiences.

Peru

Embark on the journey of a lifetime with Wonders of Peru, an immersive study abroad program that combines academic exploration with cultural discovery across four of Peru’s most vibrant cities: Lima, Cusco, Puno, and Arequipa. This unforgettable experience is designed for students eager to deepen their understanding of Latin American culture, music, and the Spanish language, all while traveling through one of the most diverse and historically rich countries in the world. 

Exploring Québec City

Québec City is the ideal location for this linguistic and cultural abroad. During two weeks, students will take a French course based on their level with a local language school. To complete this immersive experience, students will stay with approved host families, eating two meals a days with them. As part of the linguistic requirements for this abroad, students will work closely with their language teachers and will participate in cultural activities, such as playing board games, learning to cook, and visiting sites.

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.
